What Kind Of Ham Should I Buy?

You’ll need spiral-sliced, bone-in, hickory-smoked, fully cooked ham to make this recipe.

Hams come in 3 styles – city, country, and fresh.

City Hams – are sold fully cooked. They are cured by brine and usually smoked after curing aka smoked ham.

Country Hams – are cured with a dry rub, hung to dry, and sold uncooked. 

Fresh Hams – uncured and uncooked hams.

Bone-less vs Bone-In Hams

Bone-less hams – doesn’t contain any bones at all. The bone is removed before the ham is processed and sealed tightly in its packaging. It’s usually less expensive than the bone-in variety, however, since they are more processed, they are not as flavorful as bone-in hams and also have a tendency to be dry too.

Bone-In hams – are simply more flavorful and moist.  The bone provides the meat with better flavor and texture. As a bonus, the leftover bone is great for making soups, Jamaican rice, and please and stew peas. So freeze it and use it later.

A pre-cooked ham should be cooked in the oven at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes per pound, depending on the type of ham (whole vs. half, bone-in vs. no bone)or until it reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

How To Store Leftover Ham In The Fridge?

Leftover ham should be wrapped tightly and refrigerated as soon as possible. Do not leave the ham at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If it is not going to be used within 3-4 days of cooking, it should be frozen.

Leftovers can be kept for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. After that, the risk of food poisoning increases. If you donโ€™t think youโ€™ll be able to eat leftovers within four days, freeze them immediately.

Store your leftover ham covered in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, or wrap tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil or freezer wrap.

How Long Does Leftover Ham Last In The Freezer?

Properly stored, it will maintain the best quality for about 2 months but will remain safe beyond that time. 
Cooked slices, half, or spiral cut ham: 1 to 2 months
Fully-cooked, unopened ham: 1 to 2 months
Cooked, whole ham: 1 to 2 months

How To Reheat Leftover Ham On The Stove Top

Preheat a frying pan greased with cooking oil over medium heat. Place the ham slices in the pan.
Heat the ham slices for 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired temperature.
Once the ham slices are warm, remove them from the frying pan. Serve immediately and enjoy! (see microwave instructions below)

How To Reheat Leftover Ham In The Microwave?

Place a damp paper towel over the plate to add moisture and prevent the ham meat from drying out too much. Reheat for about 30-60 seconds on each side. Check that the ham has heated all the way through. Remove the paper towel and serve. The actual time varies depending on your microwave.

How To Reheat Leftover Ham In The Oven?

The goal is to reheat the ham without drying it out. The best way to do this is to place the ham on a rack in a roasting pan. Add water to the bottom of the pan and cover the whole thing tightly with foil. Bake at 325 ยบ Fahrenheit for 16-20 minutes per pound, until the ham, heats all the way through. Remove ham from the oven and enjoy.

Ingredients
  

  • 6-8 pounds ham, pre-cooked, bone-in spiral-sliced, hickory-smoked
  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice (drained from the slices)
  • 1 cup Goya guava nectar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated (or ground ginger)
  • 6 whole cloves + 1/4 cup to garnish the ham
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 12 oz Grace guava jelly (one jar)
  • 1 can pineapple slices

Instructions
 

How To Make The Pineapple-Guava Glaze
  1. Combine the pineapple juice, guava juice, liquid from the pineapple slices, sugar, ginger, and cloves in a small saucepan and mix to dissolve the sugar granules.
  2. Boil for about 30 minutes or until the mixture has reduced to a syrupy consistency.
  3. Place the pineapple slices in the syrup and heat for about one minute before removing the pot from the flame and set it aside.
Now, Let’s Prep The Ham
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Line the roasting rack and large roasting pan with foil and set aside.
  3. Unwrap the ham and discard the packaging (including the glaze that came with it.
  4. Rinse the ham under cool running water and pat it dry.
  5. Wrap ham in foil and place in the oven for 1.5 hours or until the ham has been heated throughout and reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Once done remove and allow the ham to cool.
  6. Score ham if you’re not using a spiral-cut ham.
  7. Arrange the glazed pineapple slices on the ham and fasten each with toothpicks or cloves.
  8. Spoon or generously brush the pineapple glaze all over the ham.
  9. Melt the Grace guava jam in a small saucepan over low heat. Once melted generously brush melted jam over the surface of the ham.
  10. Return to ham to the oven (uncovered) for 15 minutes or until the ham has achieved the desired color.
